Los Cabos, located at the southern tip of the nearly 1,000-mile long Baja California peninsula (one of the longest in the world), is within easy air travel
of the U.S. and Canada and a spectacular 2-3 day drive for the adventuresome.
It is bordered on the west by the cool waters of the Pacific Ocean
and on the east
and south by the warmer waters of the Sea of Cortez (also known as the Gulf of California).
The confluence of these two waters have given rise to the fertile fishing grounds
that has been the trademark of Los Cabos, and produced one of the world’s most biologically diverse marine environments, called “The World’s Aquarium” by Jacques Costeau. On
land, the
area is classified as a “tropical thorn forest” with vast tracts of desert terrain
tumbling into the two seas. Cabo San Lucas, at the peninsula’s very tip, is where
you find El Arco, the natural stone arch known the world over as a symbol
of Los Cabos with its unique and spectacular natural beauty. |
|
The two main tourist areas in Los Cabos are the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. The towns are 28 kilometers (approximately 20 miles) apart, and the resort area between them is
called the Tourist Corridor. Bordering Cabo San Lucas
on the west is the newly emerging tourist area known as Cabo Pacifica. |
|
There is only one major highway in Los Cabos, the Carretera
Transpeninsular (Mexico
1), which traverses the entire length of the Baja Peninsula, starting in Tijuana
and terminating
in Cabo San Lucas. Another smaller highway, Mexico 19, runs
from Cabo San Lucas through the “Magic City” of Todos Santos to La Paz, the state
capital of Baja California Sur. |
